You might think this means that Scorsese could be blamed for the ADD addled action and horror films of late with the shaky camera work and the awful, incoherent editing where no shot lasts longer than a half second... Not so. See, this film is entirely coherent, it's easy to follow. It's not a cluttered mess like so many recent films, and it tells a story without making you queasy from motion sickness.

The story follows Henry Hill, the real life gangster who once ran with the Lucchese crime family. It's sort of a biopic, but it doesn't feel like one. In fact, you won't believe for a second that this is all based in reality. The truth is that some of the things these gangster do... It's so wild that it couldn't be anything but the invention of a screenwriter... But, gangsters could be creative guys...

Of course, the film isn't a documentary, it's not all fact and no story. But... The movie actually tones it down in some ways. The characters were often much, much more brutal in life than they ever aspired to be in the film. DeNiro's Jimmy Conway, for example. In the film, he's shown as the level headed one, capable of violence, but not anxious for it. Not so with the real life Jimmy Burke, who would stuff children into refrigerators to scare their parents who owed them money.

Joe Pesci's Tommy DeVito is a whole other story. In the film, he has a hair trigger temper and murders several people over relatively minor insults. In real life, Tommy DeSimone didn't need minor insults. At one point in their youth, he and Henry Hill were walking down the street and, seeing a man neither of them had ever met before, DeSimone said "Henry, watch this!" and pulled out a pistol and shot the man in the head, killing him instantly. Hill reportedly said "Tommy that was cold", to which Tommy replied "Well I'm a cold cat!"

So... You could almost say the movie sugarcoats it for us...

The pace of the film is not just a stylistic device, but rather, something that puts us in Hill's state of mind as his cocaine addiction spirals out of control. The more drugs he puts in his body, the faster the film gets, until finally we're brought crashing down into the sad, sober state of his reality as his friends betray him and he's forced to turn to the witness protection program.

The film makes an excellent companion piece to the similar Casino. Both are based on real life mob stories, and in both, we see DeNiro playing the wiser, less volatile gangster to Pesci's loose-cannon sociopath. On just about every level, Goodfellas is on even ground with The Godfather Part II. The lead character is named Jesus. Jee-Zuss, not Hey-Seuss. It's... It's a Biblical name, you could say. Jesus is a basketball prodigy, one of the most promising the city has ever seen. The schools trying to court him are more than just aggressive. They seem this close to asking him "Who do you want killed to come play for us?" They really do just about go that far.

Jesus' father, played by Denzel Washington, has been in prison for years, ever since he was convicted of involuntary slaughter after the accidental death of the mother during an altercation that turned physical, only for a second, but a second was all it took to destroy their family life together. Jesus has never forgiven his father for the mother's death, and a primary focus of the film is... Whether or not he ever will.

The warden at the prison offers a deal: Let the father out for a little while to convince Jesus to join the warden's alma mater, and they'll see about reducing the sentence.

So the father is put out on the streets for a little while to try and convince his son. For the father, it's not simply an assignment that will help him get a reduced sentence, rather, it's a chance at redemption, a chance at forgiveness. It's not really about the reduced sentence, it's about finding his son's love again. Not that his son sees it that way.

The father has other issues to deal with, such as a prostitute he falls in love with, while the son already has enough on his mind as the talent scouts put him through an endless parade of cash bribes, drugs and sex with gorgeous women in attempts to get him to join up. Through it all, Jesus has to maintain his righteousness, he has to stay strong and make the right decision for himself and for his little sister, who he's cared for all these years. He enjoys these offerings, but tries to resist temptation.

The movie ends in a way that, while it doesn't wrap everything up neatly in a little bow, it does deliver on an emotional level, and that's where it really counts in the end.

The film is frightening and shocking at times, it's moving, and it boasts a lot of emotional depth and truth. The film also carries some great music by Public Enemy, notably the title track, He Got Game. Since then, Spike Lee has reinvented himself again, creating more marketable, polished films. The film is very funny because when you think about it, the very notion of war is absurd. Not to discredit the courage of those who have gone to defend their countries, the film focuses on the business of war, the administrative end, where politicians will send men to die for the sake of their own egos. In fact the notion of the bomb as phallic symbol is made literal with the iconic image of the film: Major Kong riding a nuclear bomb down to Earth while whirling a cowboy hat over his head.

The movie has something to say, but it never feels preachy. It is sincerely, honestly funny. The statement it makes is simply through the fact that it's so unabashedly funny, that, on the eve of nuclear winter, we're hearing jokes like "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here, this is a WAR room!"

When Kubrick dealt with similar subject matter in Full Metal Jacket, he managed to make a movie that was just as funny without it being so overt. There are no direct jokes in that film, but the movie stands as a comic masterpiece nevertheless. By the mid eighties it would seem that Stanley Kubrick had come to think that you don't need jokes to make war seem absurd.

At the heart of the film would be Peter Sellers in multiple roles. These days, one star in multiple roles is usually a sign of a bad comedy, where the producers thought that a weak script could be saved with enough money to just hire one star and put him in a dozen different sizes of fat suit. Sellers was simply a master of creating characters and was allowed to create several for the film.

Of course the centerpiece of these performances is Strangelove himself, the wheelchair bound former Nazi physicist suffering from "alien hand syndrome", wherein he will subconsciously throw out a Nazi salute only to have to pull his hand back down. The link between the power of nuclear arms and sexual dysfunction is made most clear with Strangelove, who seems to experience a real thrill when the bombs start falling.

George C. Scott's performance as General Buck Turgidson is another highlight. It's odd to see such a wild performance from Scott, who is typically noted as a gruff master of understatement. Certainly, his trademark is to do with a grizzly whisper what most would do with a shout. Kubrick actually had to trick Scott into going so wild for this role by requesting over the top "practice" takes, and then using them in the actual movie. Slim Pickens as Major Kong was similarly fooled into giving a straight performance by being told that the film was a standard war film and not a comedy.

If you've not seen it yet, Dr. Strangelove is one of the all time great films on the subject of war, and definitely one of those to see some time in your life. The movie is really all about the cool little details Leone packed into the film. It starts with a great sequence of Eastwood beating a bounty up with a single hand, and then goes on to Lee Van Cleef selecting one of his dozens of long barrel guns to take out a bad guy, and eventually we get to see one of the coolest western villains of all time.

See, he uses a pocket watch every time he kills someone. It's a musical pocket watch, so he winds it up and lets it play while staring down his adversary. When the music comes to a stop... He draws and fires. Definitely a great villainous ritual for any western baddie to commit to.

Cleef and Eastwood make a great team as the heroes. Cleef plays Colonel Mortimer, a former Civil War hero turned bounty hunter, while Eastwood plays, again, the Man With No Name. This film is, chronologically within the world of the film, the final act, even though it was released second (The Good the Bad and the Ugly serves as a prequel to Fistful of Dollars), and Eastwood has had enough violence and wants to retire, but still plays the Kid role to Cleef's older, wiser bounty hunter.

One great scene has the two shooting each other's hats off, and then shooting said hats down the street, as, essentially, a way of chest pounding, showboating, to impress the other. It begins with the two wanting the other to back off their bounty, and ends with the two building a strong partnership that's a lot of fun to watch develop.

No other Spaghetti Western uses music quite as interestingly as this one. The final showdown utilizes the musical pocket watch, and an orchestrated version of the melody it plays to build up an incredible amount of tension, so by the time someone finally fires a gun, you'll be crazy with anticipation and begging them to just get it over with already so you can stop clutching your fists.

Sergio Leone has made some of the greatest contributions to film, and his career was cut sadly short just before Stalingrad, the WWII film which might have been his Magnum Opus.

The one thing missing is perhaps Eli Wallach. The film is set around a man that is in desperate need of money, and hatches a plan for two men to kidnap his wife in order to collect ransom money from his wife's well to do father. Jerry, the husband is a shady car dealer with a checkered past of bad car deals and numerous methods to make a quick buck.

The trouble really begins when Jerry learns that he does not need the money, when another business venture that he has tried to start seems as though it will get the financial backing that it requires. So in an attempt to call off the kidnapping, Jerry learns that he cannot get a hold of the soon to be captors. The next sequence involves the two kidnappers very awkwardly taking Jerry's wife, Jean.

While the original ransom was set for 80,000 between the captors and Jerry, Jerry later decides to tell his father in law that they are demanding a million. He agrees adamantly to pay it, but demands that he is there to give it to the kidnappers himself. Wade, the father in law, actually aims to kill the kidnappers and get his daughter without giving them the money at all.

It isn't a surprise that the whole thing gets botched, leaving Wade dead and one of the two kidnappers sent to collect the money very much wounded. He is able, though, to get the money and flee. He discovers there is a million, and he hides all but the 80,000 that his partner was aware of. Back at the cabin, the wounded crook finds the wife dead at the hands of the other crook. They get into an argument, and the already wounded kidnapper also dies.

Well, the police had recently learned of their whereabouts, and soon swooped in to arrest Carl's partner. The next scene features Jerry being arrested as well in another location, so you are left to assume that somehow the whole plan had been confessed somewhere along the line. Great performances were in abundance, two of the most noteworthy being William H. Macy (Jerry) and Steve Buschemi (Carl).

That, is "Fargo". While there is certainly a good bit to know about this film, perhaps this was helpful towards encouraging you to see it if you haven't already. The book is important but is often difficult for people to get through for a number of reasons. The plot tends to have patches of intense action which are interspersed through long periods of travel. It could have just been another formulaic sitcom. Many comedians, they get a TV deal so the first thing they do is create just another family sitcom. The blue collar dad, the football widow wife, the kids (usually a daughter and a son) and the wacky neighbor. The Drew Carey Show, while still being more or less based on the comedian's act, also took the sitcom in a new direction.

It's not a family sitcom, it's a single guy sitcom, about a guy in his forties who is not happy with his life.

Like Seinfeld, the show never really delved into the same formulaic plots about Superbowl parties and so on, and really went in a whole new direction creating its own, new concepts for great TV stories. It's about the existential dread, the fear you feel when you're anywhere between thirty and fifty and wondering why your life didn't shape up the way you wanted it to. It's really interesting, and a little deeper than the usual Football Widow jokes you see in most sitcoms.

By the end of the series, Carey was making something like a million dollars an episode but, sadly, the ratings were starting to drop and the show had to be canceled, even though it did garner a loyal following who would always make sure that they were at home after work in time to watch it.

The show was refreshing in that it focused not on a family, but on a single guy who's not all that attractive or in shape and hasn't risen to anything above mid-level department store management in his career. The show focuses on a man who seems to be perpetually on the verge of a mid-life crisis. He's around forty and hasn't really done anything with his life yet. It's really an interesting premise with a lot of room to explore different story ideas without always falling back on the "Son borrows the car without asking" story like so many family based sitcoms.

It's something of an acknowledgement that family can mean "You and your friends", that family can be defined however you choose to define it, and that the mom, dad and kids aren't the only backbone of family in the United States, and furthermore, that for family to only possibly mean dad, mom and kids is really excluding so many other real families from inclusion in what it means to love the people around you.

And of course, it's funny. Lewis and Oswald may well be the second and third funniest comic relief characters of the nineties, after Cosmo Kramer, of course. The Nazis raid her bar, and she and Indy escape with the headpiece. They endure many more dangerous encounters before finally losing the Ark to the Frenchman Belloq and his Nazi colleagues. However, Belloq wants to test the Ark before he delivers it to Adolph Hitler, so he opens it. This kills everyone except Jones and Marion, who keep their eyes closed. At the end, the Ark arrives in America and is promptly stored in a warehouse.

The film earned Oscars for Film Editing, Art Direction, Sound Effects Editing, Sound, and Visual Effects. It lost the nomination for Best Picture. Visual effects were furnished by Industrial Light and Magic, and Ben Burtt was in charge of sound effects. John Williams composed the score and was nominated for an Academy Award, but lost to Vangelis, who provided the score for Chariots of Fire.

On location filming in Tunisia was challenging for members of both the crew and cast. The heat was oppressive, and many also fell victim to dysentery and other illnesses. You might not be so surprised to learn that this movie was remade from its 1960 release version, to be revamped and re released under the same title nearly forty years later. So when you have a story that is worth waiting nearly four decades to release again, you know that you are sitting on something great. That is exactly what Alfred Hitchcock had in mind, presenting a viewer with a scenario they had never experienced before.

So what made this film so impacting? Well, it was partly due to when it was released. It was in a time when people were still trusting their fellow man for the most part. Trusting them almost too much, in fact. This film made you reconsider this aspect of yourself and made you start doing a little bit of investigative work before you decided if anyone was okay to spend time alone with.

The thing that made the film so terrifying was Norman Bates. Not that he alone was just a terrifying antagonist, but that Norman Bates seemed like a normal guy who could have very well been your next door neighbor in any neighborhood. This could be someone that you don't assume is going to be violently off their rocker, and that is what makes the object so terrifying.

You might not be surprised to learn that the revamped version that was released in 1998 did not stray much at all from the plot of the original release. There were a few distinct differences between the two, namely being that one was in color and one was in black and white. Another distinct difference would have been the ability to become more visual, given the enhanced special effects that thirty eight years had provided cinema.

Through the course of the film you not only learn that Norman Bates has a killer instinct, you also learn a rather shocking and very deadly secret about the Bates family... A secret worth killing for to say the least. In the remake Marion Crane by Anne Heche while the creepy and deadly Norman Bates is played by Vince Vaughn.

There are so many different things to appreciate about this film, if nothing else for the fact that it is a remake of a classic from the master of horror himself, Alfred Hitchcock. Don't say that you weren't warned, now. There is going to be a detailed plot synopsis within the upcoming paragraphs and while it might not be laid out how the movie ends exactly, there will be a lot of plot details that are brought to light. So if you don't want to read into the plot before seeing the film, this is your opportunity because the plot will start being discussed in the next paragraph.

You start off the film by meeting two of the main characters, Detective William Somerset and Detective David Mills. Somerset is a senior member of the force and is paired with the new blood, Mills, to help integrate him smoothly to the big city life as a detective. A short time later they are assigned to crime scenes that are unlike anything either of them have seen.

The first of these involves a morbidly obese man who was force fed spaghetti until a simple blow to the stomach split him open, killing him. Later, Mills discovers the word "GLUTTONY" written behind the refrigerator. On the other scene, a corrupt lawyer involved in getting guilty people off the hook for a decent compensation was found dead amongst various dollar bills. The word "GREED" was written on the floor here.

It is not a lengthy amount of time before the pieces reveal that these murders are relative to the seven deadly sins from Biblical teachings. So while they have discovered two, that leaves five that have already happened or will happen. Now it is a race against the clock to locate the next victims. This is a pursuit that ends more seconds too late than anything.

To make things even harder to wrap your head around, the suspect, John Doe, not only turns himself in but also agrees to take the detectives to the location of the last two victims that had not been discovered yet. Armed with the promise of a written confession upon their return, the detectives head out with Doe to the location of where the last two victims are to be found, but they might not be who you would have guessed.

By watching the film, you can appreciate four incredible parts that were played by perfectly matched actors and actresses. The lead roles by Brad Pitt (Detective Mills) and Kevin Spacey (John Doe) are among the best of both of their careers. This is not to downplay the supporting roles by Morgan Freeman (Detective Somerset) and the role of Detective Mills wife, Tracy portrayed by Gwenyth Paltrow.

This movie could have possibly been one of the best movies to be released in the 90s and has skyrocketed to become one of the most acclaimed crime dramas of all time. Shame is a truly courageous film. It deals with the issue of racism in the south, but it did so at the dawn of the civil rights era. It was easy to make a movie about racism in the eighties or nineties. Making a movie about racism in the early sixties, that's another story entirely. Corman actually made this film in the south, in the early sixties, and he was constantly threatened and harassed by the populace of the small rural town where the film was set.

William Shatner really owns the role of the villain in this film. It's his boyish charm that makes it work.

The concept of the charming racist villain may have been inspired by Adolf Hitler. Corman could have hired a villain actor to play the villain, but the inspired choice of casting someone who seems innocent on the outside exemplifies a primary theme of the film, that being that you need a handsome spokesman to sell ugly ideas.

Corman and his crew were actually run out of town when the local police got wise to what sort of a movie he was doing, and the last few shots he grabbed were literally filmed with the police only a few blocks away and closing in. Literally, the police were walking towards Corman at the time he was filming the last few shots, and he had to hurry up and wrap the shoot, and then pack everything in the truck and vamoose.

Corman is earning a lifetime achievement award at the Oscars in 2010, but there has been sadly little coverage of his life and times in cinema. For as much as he's contributed, Corman's Oscar is long overdue.

Yes, Corman made a name for himself as a schlockmeister, but he also directed some real American classics and he launched the careers of Dennis Hopper, Jack Nicholson and Martin Scorsese, to name a few. The modern cinematic landscape wouldn't be the same without Corman's incredible contributions to the industry.

The two (Anton and Llewelyn) continue to meet up with each other, both trying to lay claim to the money and willing to die to either keep it or retrieve it. Nearly everyone who is introduced into the story winds up either injured or dead when the credits roll.

Steve Martin and Rick Moranis co-star as, respectively, a made man from the New York mafia currently in the witness protection program, and an FBI agent protecting him from the goombas that would have him whacked. Martin is sent to a picturesque small American town, so it's your standard fish out of water story, but because it's done very well this time, it works, it's funny and it feels relatively fresh. It all comes down to how the story is told, and this one is told well enough.

Of course what really matters is... The movie is funny. Steve Martin hits all the right notes, even the jokes that probably didn't read all that great in the script, Moranis and Martin have that perfect comedic instinct that helps salvage mediocre material and really knock good material out of the park. The typical odd couple relationship is lent a lot of extra mileage by two funny performers who know how to make the most of material with potential.

It's very funny watching Martin take over the small town. He meets some of his old buddies, also in the witness protection program, and they all decide to get together and form a sort of mini-mafia of their own. You'd think that watching these guys steal trucks and threaten people in the small town would be scary, but in fact, it's kind of cute, playful. They have a lot of fun with it and it really does seem like it's all in the name of having a good time rather than ripping people off.

The movie does get directly involved in some violent stuff later on, but it never gets ugly, it's always funny and never unpleasant.

Another big source of laughs is in watching Martin effortlessly juggle his two girlfriends and wife. Somehow, these three women never find out about each other, and there's a suspicion that, if they did, he would find a way to talk his way out of it, like always. Martin's character is a crook, but such a likable, friendly crook, he could steal your wallet and your heart at the same time.

The movie has a really great look to it. The whole point of the film is the contrast between Martin's violent, urban upbringing, and the small town friendliness and beauty of his new environs, and the cinematography really does the trick. After the death of the Senator from Jefferson's state, his governor choose Jefferson as his replacement. This was part of a greater scheme. The Governor thought that Jefferson would serve as a political puppet that could be easily manipulated to do the evil deeds of the corrupt Senators in office. His overall honest reputation coupled with his lack of street smarts made Jefferson the perfect stooge. Jefferson is not aware of this plan and is only grateful to be a part of the Senate.

Jefferson's Governor selected him for Senate because he thought his simple, wide eyed, average Joe ways would make him the perfect stooge for his corrupt boss in the Senate. They needed someone that would not cause them any problems and would do exactly what they said. They agreed Jefferson would be the right fit for the job. He was well known in his small community for being an honest man and this is exactly the image they needed to hide their wicked schemes behind.

Jefferson believes in the integrity of the government and puts his full faith and trust in those that create policy and uphold laws. His peers do not take him seriously. He appears to be out of place and not as sophisticated as his other fellow Senators. At times, he is considered to be a bumbling idiot and too small town to work and understand the complex world of government politics. But they soon find out they underestimated Jefferson and he becomes a force to be contended with once he finds out about the dishonest dealings taking place.

Jefferson learns of the corrupt deals exchanging hands between Senators. He is saddened and shocked by the revelation. But he quickly goes into action and seeks to fix the Senate and restore its integrity. He stands alone against those against him and fights for a just Senate.

He decides to expose the Senators to the American people by stage a filibuster. He takes the Senate floor for several hours and exposes the illegal activities he witnesses in the Senate. For the first time, he is listened to and seen as a threat.

This film received mixed reviews from its critics. On one hand it was applauded for its effort to expose corruption within American politics. But on the other, it was criticized for showing the Senate in a bad light. For many years, I used the old ladders as quilt and afghan display racks in my living room. I simply leaned the ladders against the wall, then draped hand made blankets over some of the steps, or rungs.

When looking through my books one day though, I realized I had many old hard backs which were beautiful. And I somehow got the idea to combine those extra books with the old ladders, and create my very own book shelf.

The first step was to make sure I had enough extra books for the project. So I gathered all the old ones I didn't want anymore, and removed any paper covers that were still in place.

Then I created two stacks of books based on colors and thicknesses. I was trying to color coordinate them as best I could, and I needed both stacks to be as close to the same height as possible as well, so that the final bookshelf design would be level.

Once I had the two stacks matching in height, I glued all the books for each stack together.

Now I also wanted to make sure I had some sort of "feet" on my bookshelf so that it would be stable on my living room carpet. So I chose four additional books of equal thicknesses.

The first step was to create "feet" for my bookshelf, and I did this by simply glueing each of the four extra books to one long side of one ladder. Instead of squaring each book up with the side of the ladder, or placing it crosswise, I wanted a bit much more of an interesting look. So I turned each book partly, so that it was more on a diagonal cross with the side of the ladder. I then glued these in place.

Once the feet had dried, I then placed the two stacks of books onto the other long side of my ladder which had the feet in place, and I glued those stacks down too. So at this point I had one ladder laying on it's side, with four "feet" on the bottom and two stacks of books on top.

Famously that arrangement was completely dried, I then turned the second ladder on its side, and placed it on top of the two stacks of books. That was also glued down securely onto the top of the stacked books.

At that point I was done. I put the brand new shelf unit against the wall, and added some deep books onto the "shelves" near where my glued stacks of books where, to help hold everything in place while it dried fully. After a time I added family photos, much more books, and some of our favorite DVD sets.

To completely finish a project like this completely though, I will seal all of the shelves books with a clean coat finish. The film is allegedly based on Heart of Darkness, the novel, but outside of a few key parallels, the two are very different stories, albeit sharing a similar nihilistic tone and a few moments. We follow Martin Sheen as the alcoholic Captain Ben J. Willard, a secret operative who has grown more and more psychotic in his time away from the action.

The only thing he wants is to be put back into action, thriving on the blood lust and having no other purpose in life than to fight. He rots away in his room as choppers fly over head, going stir crazy while awaiting the next assignment.

The famous shot of Sheen punching the mirror was not scripted. He really went that crazy. The film is full of scenes and moments that were not scripted, and not just because of Coppola's open attitude towards improvisation. The making of feature on this film is just about as wild and as fascinating as the movie itself, but we've only got time to review one or the other for now...

The movie is simply loaded with unforgettable characters. Without even discussing the main cast, we have Cockroach, a youth from Harlem capable of sleeping through the most intense battle, waking up to launch a perfectly arced grenade at an enemy hiding in the shadows, eliminate him, and go back to sleep. We have Dennis Hopper as a maniacal photo journalist, and Robert Duvall as Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore, a mix of samurai, Patton and surfer dude, sending his men out to hit the waves amidst napalm detonating against the beach.

You could remove any of these characters still tell the story, these are not major characters, but, they provide more color and personality to the film than the entire cast of most films. The real heart of the film is Colonel Kurtz, as played by Marlon Brando. He defines the nihilistic dread that casts itself over the entirety of the movie.

The film succeeds on every possible level. It is endearing, at times, when you see the camaraderie between the men on Willard's boat. It's funny, it's exciting with some of the greatest action set pieces ever put to film, it's a jaw dropping piece of cinematic art, yet... The pessimism, the nihilism of the two main characters, Willard and Kurtz, eventually takes over and overwhelms every other aspect of the film.

Coppola himself claims Rumble Fish as his personal favorite amongst his own work, but his fans are typically split between Apocalypse Now and The Godfather Part 2. You might be surprised to learn that many people seem to think that this movie was based on real events. The truth is, that this is not the case. While there might be a little bit of truth in the telling of any good work of fiction, this is not the retelling of any one series of events. Perhaps the film is thought to be based on real life because it has a no holds barred approach to laying this film out in front of you. They don't pull punches.

The movie starts rolling by introducing you to Danny Vinyard, who is still in high school. After getting in some trouble over having written a history paper on a white supremacist, he is told to write a paper on his brother Derek. Derek is Danny's older brother and he is, for all intents and purposes, the main character of the piece.

Shortly there later, you learn about Derek's position in the community. He represents a very strong gang of white supremacists, and he is their fearless leader. This really takes root very early in Derek's life, when he sees his father attempting to put out a fire to save lives, and he is gunned down by a black drug dealer right in front of Derek. A man takes Derek under his wing, and guides him in the knowledge and path of white supremacy. So Derek formed his gang, and they were all too eager to be under his leadership.

You also learn why Derek is in jail, through the retelling of his brother Danny in a narrative. Three black men attempt to break into Derek's car and he is alerted and heads outside with a pistol drawn. He gets two out of the three with shots, killing one and wounding another. What follows is one of the most graphic sequences ever depicted on film, in which he forces the wounded man to place his teeth on the curb and Derek stomps on the back of his head, killing him.

Derek is forced to confront his hating ways in prison, when he realizes that he is the minority and there is no protection for him. He, through a lengthy series of circumstances, befriends a black man that he is on laundry duty with. Derek vows that he would do anything to take it all back and start over again far away from what he now represents. He learns that his younger brother is headed in the same direction, and he will not allow this to happen.

He is released and meets up with his girlfriend at a welcome home party. He asks her to move with her, but she refuses. He is also forced to face the man that taught him to be a white supremacist and tells him that this is no way to live. He and his brother leave, and Danny is able to finish the paper which you hear as the narration for the ending of the film.

The movie ends with Danny being shot in the bathroom at school by a black kid. Edward Norton (Derek) and Edward Furlong (Danny) bring this powerful story to light. "American History X" is a depiction in the difference between being right and believing that you are right. It is a statement of how far some people are willing to go to prove one way or another. ]]>
